The event, held ahead of the NATO Summit in London, is organised in association with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and with the support of the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC).
For its 20th edition, Friends of Europe’s Balkans Summit will be looking at the political, economic and social issues defining the relations between the EU and the Western Balkans as well as developments in the region.
The Prespa Agreement has brought new hopes to the region and the 2020 Croatian EU Council Presidency could bring a bigger voice for the Balkans. Despite challenges like the lack of employment opportunities, emigration, and the under-representation of women in the labour market, the region has the potential to move ahead and grow stronger. Digitalisation could offer the opportunity to ease these structural economic and social bottlenecks. Reconciliation remains also imperative with many peace initiatives at the local level offering additional and different ways to move forward.
