Brüssel: 30.5.2017 – Summit “ASEAN”

PAST
Join us and Friends of Europe for the Policy Summit “ASEAN in 2017 and beyond”
on Tuesday 30 May 2017, from 09.30 to 13.30, in Brussels. This event is being organised with the assistance of the European Union.

The 40th anniversary of EU-ASEAN relations also provides leaders of both regions with the opportunity to craft a new forward-looking strategy for the future development of their partnership.

With some of ASEAN’s top politicians and decision-makers in attendance, we will be debating ways of rebooting the region’s relations with the EU.

UNDER DISCUSSION /
As it gears up to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2017, it is clear that the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has come a long way. Set up at a time of conflicts and mutual suspicion in the region, the group is now recognised as being at the centre of regional security arrangements for peace in the Asia-Pacific. The 40th anniversary of EU-ASEAN relations also provides leaders of both regions with the opportunity to craft a new forward-looking strategy for the future development of their partnership.

– What are the key achievements of ASEAN and the key challenges it faces as it turns fifty?
– How does the EU-ASEAN relationship compare with ASEAN’s economic and diplomatic ties with other global players, including the US, Australia, China and Japan?
– How is the growing urban middle class impacting on ASEAN’s economic, political and societal landscape?
– Are European business leaders seizing the economic opportunities offered by the ASEAN Economic Community and the connectivity initiatives, including in the digital sector?
